Ten Years Younger

'10 Years Younger’ is back on our screens.  I have always enjoyed the programme, some of the transformations have been  jaw dropping and some of the ‘before’ states have been pretty eye opening too!  I even liked the style of Nicky Hambleton-Jones, an odd mix of haughty and naughty! But 38 year old Nicky, has now been replaced by the ubiquitous Myleen Klass.

Now, I have met Myleene, who at 31 is just as sweet as she seems, but you know what they say, even your favourite sweet can get a bit sickly after a while.  Currently Myleene is everywhere.  Now she’s presenting 10 years younger like an excited puppy yapping around the legs of older mutts.  I ask, can we really take her seriously as a stylist?  Her flawless finish may be off putting enough for the poor souls trying to fashion their own silk purses from sows ears but her youthful exuberance may be just a step too far.

As I understand it, Nicky was replaced because the programme makers  thought they should go with someone a bit younger.  Well I think they were wrong.  Nicky brought a certain gravitas to the programme and when she spoke, we listened. She seemed at home with all the professionals and somehow I can’t see the silk purse wannabes of this series taking on what Myleene has to say in quite the same way.  After all her own image, I am sure, owes more to her styling team than her own knowledge and effort!  Why do the media feel that they always have to trot out the young and the flawless to preach to an audience who, in the majority are probably anything but!  Get real for once.  The programme idea is great but it might be even greater with less unattainable perfection fronting it!

I personally would find it very difficult to take fashion advice from Myleene with her ex pop group history or anyone so young with no background in the makeover business.  Her experience is simply not relevant to mine! I have not got to the age I am without knowing what works for me, and no amount of her sweet smiles would be likely to convince me otherwise!

In fact if I went looking for a personal shopper or even a shop assistant  I would never chose a younger person, their tastes are so different to mine and as I said, I have been dressing myself for a long time now, I think I know what suits!  Maybe that's it. Instead of striving all the time to be ‘Ten Years Younger’ we need programmes that show us how to be happy at whatever age or size we are NOW and celebrate our individuality today instead of trying to hold back the years.
